Some organizing thoughts from early on a Christmas morning

December 25th, 2011

Here it is 6:30 A.M. Christmas morning. I think we got to sleep in longer when we had small kiddies in the house, but now our 3 year old chocolate lab Clancy thinks she needs to be fed precisely at this time each and every morning, holidays included!

One good thing about getting up so early is that I am well and truly prepared for our 10 A.M. brunch with family - French toast already soaked, fresh berry compote made, cream whipped, coffee ready to flip on, and both the eggs and the hash browns prepared and ready!

So I am sitting enjoying my usual cup of English Breakfast tea (no tea bags mind you - it's the real thing), reading the newspaper and almost drooling at all the storage receptacles featured in the Walmart and Target flyers. Although I realize that we are all still to enjoy this Christmas day - the vendors (and I) are already thinking post-Christmas organization!!

If you have never organized your Christmas decorations properly, or have them stored in old hodge-podge cardboard boxes, why not make this the year to organize them for next year? Both Target and Walmart have great organizers advertised - from wrapping paper holders and ornament holders to wreath and Christmas tree container storage boxes. I suggest you purchase either red or green storage containers for easy identification in the years to come. Group like items together (e.g., dining room decorations/living room/trim-a-tree, etc.) Label each container before putting it away. You will thank me next year!

Don't just stop with organizing your holiday decorations. Resolve that in 2012 you are going to organize your entire home - going room by room. Maybe designating even a month per room to allow yourself heaps of time to be thorough, breaking down each room into specific tasks (for example, in the Bathroom, do the medicine cabinet one day and under the sink another day, and so on). By breaking each room area down you will not become overwhelmed. Also, don't forget to clean thoroughly as you go along.

Target has great office and desk organizing products featured in today's paper, along with Living Room and storage units that can be used in just about any room. Not only are they inexpensive, they are attractive too.

I hope you had a wonderful day today with whoever you were celebrating with (remember calories don't count today!) and hopefully I have motivated you to hit the stores in the next few days to purchase the appropriate storage containers you need to help you have a super organized 2012!
