G’Day! Did you know that January has been given the auspicious title of “Get Organized Month” by the National Association of Professional Organizers? So here we are already to the third day of January. What have you done to change your life so far? (at least as far as re-organizing!) I have said it before but will say it again – one of the top resolutions people make each year (other than losing weight) is to be more organized. So let’s do both!
I actually already have 4 – yes, that is 4 – huge trash bags of stuff that are leaving our home. I went room by room January 1 and if “it” did not fit into the “I love it, use it, or am sentimentally attached to it” category, I decided it was time “it” should leave and find a home elsewhere! Tomorrow there will be a trip to the Disabled Veterans thrift store. I would like to say, by the way, that most of stuff in these 4 bags came from what our daughter Kaitlyn left behind before she shifted to Korea!
As I was doing laundry yesterday I decided that it was time for all the socks in the “orphan sock bucket” to go. They had been there for a year and obviously had not met their soul mate in that time, so it was bye-bye. No regrets! What is it about socks that makes people cling onto them? I mean you can purchase a packet of 5 pairs of white socks for $6, so why do we feel we should keep on to the strays when they cost so little? I don’t know the answer, but I do know that this is probably an issue for a lot of you. My suggestion is in the future to buy the same brand for both black and white socks. This way if one goes missing you can always rematch it with another. You also have permission to right now collect all those stray socks and TOSS them! Really – it’s no big deal. In fact – do it RIGHT NOW!!! One of my best friends in Australia who I stay with when I go home (You know who you are and BTW – I love you dearly!) has had stray sock issues in the past. She has a very active family of 5, so ends up with heaps of socks in the laundry. I convinced her last time I was there that it was time to say goodbye to the strays, and after we had paired up all that we could, we bid adieu to the strays and I bet she hasn’t looked back even once!
So, why don’t you right now purge any and all stray socks that you have. It is OK – just do it. Really, it’s OK! Oh, and let me know how many orphans you have let go of!
Merri
